i've been in my own little world the past few weeks. post holiday exhaustion and then vacation and then an insane week back after vacation. but in the last few days i've become aware of the poppies. i'd been vaguely aware of them before now but only in the vague way i was aware of something called the internet, that i was mostly staying away from during the post holiday recovery period. if i couldn't easily read it or post it on my iphone, it didn't happen. all blog posts just piled up in my reader while we were away. and then when we returned i just kind of skimmed everything. but i digress, the poppies...

the past couple days its been fun seeing people i adore showing up in all the different categories. so i look over the list and then go vote. imagine my surprise to find that i was nominated in the jewelry category and amongst really great company. some favorites are on that list so it feels weird to tell you go to vote for me. really, just vote. if you vote for me, awesome. and thanks!

the best part: they split jewelry into TWO blocks, so you can vote for kateri, too! go vote!

hooray for handmade! and poppytalk!

only 13

i was having a rough day. and then this picture appeared in my blog reader, courtesy of got a girl crush.

for those who don't know, this adorable peanut of a girl is tavi. she's a 13 year old fashion blogger who cause a bit of a ruckus last week at the dior couture show. she's pretty great not only for her wise beyond her years thoughts on fashion but for her willingness to still be a kid.

blood orange love (or a tart for m & g)

in september 2002, shawn & i spent almost a week in cinque terre, italy. we flew to europe with little or no plan. we were to end in paris though, that we knew. newly acquainted (at least to me) friends were traveling in italy at the same time and wanted us to meet up with them. and so we did. we flew from amsterdam to nice, rented a car and drove the 292 kilometers down the mediterranean coast to corniglia, also know as paradise.

we arrived a few days before our friends. we rented an apartment for next to nothing. we found a private beach to swim at everyday, despite not having packed actual swimsuits. the air smelled like an intoxicating mix of salt water and grapes, which were being harvested. we hiked from village to village, ate gelato, and took many, many pictures. everyday we went to the market, bought bread, cheese, and blood oranges or blood orange juice. we eventually met up with our friends and it was more of the same. perfection.

i'm pretty sure this was the first time shawn had blood oranges. he was hooked. for months after our return we ate blood oranges, drank their juice and wished we were back in cinque terre, with our friends.

like every food obsession, that one faded. as did the marriage of the friends we were with.

when we were at the grocery store friday night, i was trying to decide what to bake this weekend and saw the blood oranges. a blood orange tart.

m & g tart

for the crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoons salt
  • 10 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small chunks
  • 2 tablespoons (or more) ice water
  • 1 large egg yolk

mix flour, sugar and salt in processor. add butter and mix until it resembles coarse meal. whisk 2 tablespoons ice water and yolk in small bowl. add to dry ingredients and mix dough until sticky. roll into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap and press into a disk. refrigerate for a half hour.  preheat oven to 450°F. roll out disk of the dough and put into a tart plate. freeze crust for 30 minutes. place foil & pie weights into crust and bake for 15 minutes. remove foil and pie weights and place back into the oven for another 12 -15 at 350°F, until golden brown.

for the custard:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon cardamom pods, crushed slightly
  • 5 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 6 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise

bring milk, vanilla bean and cardamom to boil over medium-high heat. remove from heat. cover and let steep 15 minutes. strain milk into bowl. whisk yolks, sugar and flour in medium bowl. slowly whisk in milk. return to saucepan and cook over medium heat until pastry cream thickens and boils, whisking constantly, about 5 minutes. whisk in butter. transfer to bowl. press plastic wrap onto surface and chill 4 hours.

for the top:

  • blood oranges
  • 3 teaspoons st. germain
  • raw sugar

cut peel and white pith from oranges. slice into 1/4-inch-thick rounds. spread custard evenly in tart crust. arrange oranges in overlapping concentric circles on pastry cream. brush with st. germain. sprinkle with raw sugar and caramelize top with a cooking torch. eat and think of old friends.

maybe next week i'll make something to commemorate our miserable time in paris after leaving cinque terre. you read that right, MISERABLE. crepes maybe?

ready for her closeup

P1280291 3

i've been kinds of bored with the ring photos in my shop for awhile. i think they're perfectly nice. they get the job done but i've been taking my pictures basically the same way for months and months. yesterday at the antique shop i spotted this little girl. she had a ring on her head. i picked her up and thought, hmmm. i stood holding her for about 15 minutes before deciding she needed to come home with me.

this morning i had some fun with her and the new rings i made. so, be on the lookout for her. and the new rings.

i think she's here to stay.
