made up tart


i love rhurbarb so when it started appearing at the market a couple weeks ago, i started dreaming of all the rhubarb pies i'd made the last couple of years. then i spied a rhubarb crumble tart at fritz pastry when we were there last tuesday and i thought, hmmm, that seems like a good plan. i looked for some recipes online and none of them seemed to strike my fancy. so, i made something up. it was oh so tart with slightly crunchy carmelized bits in the topping. even shawn, who doesn't love tart flavors all that much thought it was great. hope you like it too!

 tart crust 

1 1/8 cup flour
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons cold butter
3 tablespoons water

pulse dry ingredients in the food processor. add the butter, cut into chunks. process until it looks cornmeal-y. add water to dough tablespoon by tablespoon until its sticky and will roll into a ball. wrap in plastic wrap and press into a disk. refrigerate for a half hour. press into your tart pan and return to the refrigerator for a half an hour. 

crumble top
3/4 cup flour
1 cup raw sugar
8 tablespoons cold butter
1 tablespoons orange zest
3/4 cup finely chopped pecans

pulse dry ingredients in the food processor. add the butter, cut into chunks. process until blended but still chunky.

filling
6 stalks of rhubarb, strings removed and chopped
1/2 cup of raw sugar
1/4 cup of high quality orange marmalade + 1 tablespoon
1 teaspoon of vanilla
pinch of salt

preheat the oven to 350 degrees. spread one tablespoon of marmalade over bottom of prepared tart crust. toss the remaining filling ingredients and fill the tart. evenly spread crumble top over the entire tart. bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes.

sometimes

most of the time i prefer measuring out ingredients, adding them one by one, and making my own baked goods. but then sometimes i like to go into fancy bakeries. i like to survey all the possibilities: cannolis, eclairs, coffee cakes, cookies, petit fours and cupcakes. and sometimes, sometimes i know there is only one choice. red velvet.

not ok (but getting there)

there's been stuff going on at work. big, unbelievable stuff. i thought once i gave notice things would get easier. they didn't. its been harder than ever. and my job requires me to be a grown up, to be a grown up and stay calm, remain neutral and listen.

yesterday a member of the synagogue who has been a great supporter of mine for the last 10 years called to check in and said, "how are you?" i said, "ok." she said, "shana, who are you kidding? you're not ok and that is ok. no one expects you to be superhuman."

and somehow, i feel better today.

nerd v. nerd: part 3

i am, and always have been, a casual video game player. there were games i enjoyed - super mario, zelda, hockey and i would play with friends or my dad but there were almost always things i'd rather be doing. and although i am decent at most game, and excel at fighting games, my knowledge base is inferior to shawn's.

he made these new shrinky dinks and i flipped. i knew they had to be mine.

so, i made myself a pair of earrings with them and then made the mistake of calling them fire flowers. he corrected me and then referred me to the super mario wiki. yeah, nerd. kateri said he got an extra three points for that.

last night we went to see neil gaiman read at a cbldf event. it was wonderful. he read a number of new pieces and things i've never read, including a hilarious magazine piece on the effects of alcohol on the creative writing process, as well as my favorite story, chivalry. he also read the poem "the day the saucers came" - i'm pretty sure every single person was crushing on him by the end of the poem.

show & tell

Yoyos

this thing happens when i'm preparing for a show. i lose my mind a little. i spend almost every waking moment working, or thinking about working. i make lists, countless lists of what i'm going to make, what i need for display, what supplies i need to order... i obsess about whether or not 10 partly sunny necklaces are nearly enough and whether or not i have enough dark necklaces and if i made too much pink. there's always the list of things i wanted to make that i didn't get to and there will invariably be things i forgot. but right now, a little less than 4 weeks before renegade austin, i'm trying to keep calm and carry on with the making of the yoyos. and i like them.

things seem to be blooming so much earlier this year. i swear this bleeding heart didn't bloom until june of last year and look at it now!

i came home to the most wonderful present. the talented and oh-so-kind brenda sent me this lovely brooch - a gift for following my stars. not only was this a quitting my job present which in and of itself fantastic BUT i hearted it on etsy eons ago and then forgot about it. until today that is. thanks brenda! i love it!
