summer loving

despite a late night and the red wine fog i was feeling, i managed to get up and out early-ish to green city market with kateri. bought herbs, goat cheese, a tasty muffin and all these lovelies pictured above. tonight i'm making a tomato tart and blueberry sorbet. we're watching summer vacation themed horror movies and tomorrow morning i can sleep as late as i want. this is the best summer ever.

summer book report

my greatest adventures by the light fantastic

just read:

delicate edible birds and other stories by lauren groff

starting out in the evening by brian morton

the girl who played with fire and the girl who kicked the hornet's nest by stieg larsson

twin study by stacy richter

important artifacts and personal property from the collection of lenore doolan and harold morris, including books, street fashion, and jewelry by leanne shapton

murder, suicide, whatever by gwen freeman

a truth universally acknowledged by susannah carson

that's it so far. and the pile on my nightstand (which in truth has become a bookshelf - someone was going to get hurt) isn't shrinking AT ALL.

my ring cup runneth over.

literally. there is no more room at the inn of ring storage and there are many, many more to be stored. i'm not kidding. so, i'm having a sale. a selection of rings have been marked down to $7. a ring + shipping < $10. and when i ask you, when was the last time you could by yourself a pretty little something for less than $10? get them while you can in le shoppe.

the great downsizing project of 2010

at some point this fall we are packing up our act and taking it on the road. when we arrive in portland we will be faced with a living space that will inevitably be smaller than the one we've been accustomed to. and that's ok. we bought more house than we need seven years ago because that was what people did. and we filled it with stuff. because that was also what people did. but that formula isn't going to work for us anymore - and really, it never really did. we never needed all this stuff.

the fact is, we have THINGS we will not part with. i have some plush, canisters, and books that i will be taking the 2000 miles with us. shawn has vinyl. and many musical instruments. we also have art.

but the other things, a lot of it can go. i've been purging items from my studio for the last year and giving them to friends. i've cleaned my closet again and again. now though, its time to get serious. i've started listing stuff on ebay and we're organizing items for an actual garage sale. i'm trying to look at things honestly and ask the tough questions. let me tell you, its not always easy. we really are conditioned to think more is more. but it really isn't.

so, from time to time i'm going to write about this "project" and what i'm learning. also possibly about a specific item and how it came to be in my house and its fate.

here is the first such item:

the bluebelle dunce girl doll

i bought her on etsy from the black apple. i remember the day i bought her clearly. i was at work, waiting for the black apple's shop update. i had been having a crap time of it. i was suffering from a plague-like flu and had been for weeks. i'd been making some dumb mistakes at work and in life and was feeling pretty lousy about it. i felt like i should have been perpetually wearing a dunce cap. and the dunce dolls made that seem ok. cute even. so, i sat poised and ready at my computer, determined to buy one. and i did. and she made me so happy the day she came. SO HAPPY.

fast forward 3 and a half years.

because we don't have kids she sits on a shelf. and when i notice her, she makes me smile. but mostly, she collects dust. this is NOT TO SAY i don't still have dunce cap days. i do. i just think its time for bluebelle to find a new home where she'll make someone else feel as happy as she first made me.

something fancy this way comes

Inspired by these pictures i took...

and this treasury list i made...

Ubergirly by cookoorikoo on Etsy

and the treasure trove of vintage supplies i've unearthed while cleaning my studio, i've been working on something extra girly, extra fancy and extra special.

and there's more where that came from. xo

this odd thing i did (or how i came to be in possesion of lola's teeth)

i love twitter. i do. you get glimpses into the worlds of all sorts of people. i follow all sorts of people i admire, for one reason or another. fabulous lorraine would be one such person. i'll admit that i began following her because she is the personal assistant to neil gaiman, who i find endlessly amusing and whose writing i really enjoy.

i follow people on a whim all the time and unfollow them just as quick. its the nature of twitter. i've stuck with @fablor though. she's funny. she's interesting. she's got the good hair. the fascinating job. she's a musician. and a mad animal lover. i enjoy her tweets immensely.

so, about a month ago i was riding the train home from work and noticed something funny happening on twitter:

@fablor 2

so, i think to myself, "huh. i bet kateri could do something magical with those teeth. plus, how hilarious would she find making earrings out of neil gaiman's puppy's teeth? oh yeah. this is good. this is awesome. i think this may be my best idea yet..." and then i tweet*:

*actually not the first tweet. the first tweet had a horrible typo and although i will let MANY typos slide, i won't really let one to @fablor slide. she's neil gaiman's personal assistant for the love of god. no typos allowed. this tweet was too important. this was the follow up tweet to the deleted tweet of shame.

so, i tweeted. and waited. and checked. and waited. and shawn picked me up from the train and said, "what the hell are you tweeting about teeth for?" and i explained. and he agreed, good plan. and i waited.

and then this happened:

@fablor 3

and then i called kateri. a little nervous because she was going to either find this incredibly awesome or weird and well, stalker-y.

the conversation went something like this...

kateri: hello

me: so, i did this thing. and its quite possibly the weirdest thing i've ever done for you since we've been friends. possibly the weirdest thing i've ever done for a friend. ever.

<long pause>

kateri: i'm so nervous right now.

shana: <nervous laughter> i am too and i know what this thing i did is...

and i told her.

and then the teeth came and i handed them over.

and i've seen the start of these earrings and yeah, most exellent. really, one of my best plans ever. i really hope lorraine loves them and that kateri loved making them.

things i love tuesday

we've developed a bit of a sorbet habit in our house. we've made a couple batches of peach, watermelon and blueberry. its all so refreshing and perfect for a hot summer night snack.

the blueberry has been my fave so far.

here's the recipe:

  • 3 pints fresh from the farmers market ripe blueberries (about 6 cups)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 oz. st. germain
  1. in a medium sauce pan, mix the blueberries, sugar, water and salt. bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. continue to cook, stir and mash the berries for about 25-30 minutes. remove from heat.
  2. add the lemon juice.
  3. process the berries in a blender, food processor or with an immersion blender.
  4. let cool.
  5. add the st. germain and mix thoroughly.
  6. chill in the refrigerator for 2-4 hours.
  7. freeze in your ice cream maker according to
    the manufacturer's instructions.
  8. yum.

supplies were meant to be used.

as i'm cleaning the house, preparing for the move, i am discovering the most kick ass supplies that i've been hoarding. the time to hoard is over. no supplies are sacred, too pretty to use. and if i'm not going to use it, ebay.  i'd like to move very little in the way of supplies 2000 miles.

there are things, like the vintage millinery veiling, flowers and leaves above that i bought totally on a whim. i took them out from time to time to gaze at and then tucked them back in their drawer. their time has come.

i am pleased.
