fall goodness

shawn's grandma & her beau came over for lunch. we made roasted squash and tomato soup which was pure YUM. and since i had an overabundance of homemade bread and apples in the house i decided to make bread pudding. and yeah, you should too.

apple bread pudding (adapted slightly from here)

  • 1 lb bakery bread or homemade, crusts removed, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 apple, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 3 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 cups whole milk or heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp unsulfured molasses

preheat the oven to 350°F. spread the bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 6 minutes, until crisp. transfer to a bowl and add the apple.

generously butter six 8-ounce ramekins. If using ramekins, set them on the baking sheet.

using a mixer or whisk, beat the eggs with the sugar. Beat in the ground spices, vanilla and salt.

in a medium saucepan, heat the milk with the molasses until just warm to the touch. gradually beat the warm milk into the egg mixture, scraping the bottom and side of the bowl.

distribute the bread mixture among ramekins. pour the custard over the bread mixture, making sure it soaks all of the pieces. let stand for 5 minutes. bake in the center of the oven for about 40 minutes, until puffed and set, with the tops lightly browned. Let the bread puddings rest for at least 15 minutes before serving.

things i'll miss

as we're cleaning, packing, looking for new places to live, i'm getting really excited. but also a little sad. we've lived in our house for 7 and a half years. its a beautiful, old house and it has served us well. i will miss it. plus, there are things like this that i'm just not going to get anywhere else.

what i made today

i went to the antique store on friday and won the millinery flower lottery. red velvet, black and white silk, red silk with aqua pistils, white cotton, purple velvet... there was a large bowl filled to the brim and i emptied it. completely. it spent $60 and walked away with a giant paper bag stuffed with what felt like air.

vintage millinery flowers are so delicate and beautiful. sometimes it takes me a little while to figure out what i could possibly make that would be worthy. but the red flowers above? i knew right away. but these were some of the most oddly constructed flowers i've ever used. that presented a design challenge that took me the better part of the day to overcome.

however, i am quite pleased with the results.

not so lazy sunday

i woke up extra early due to the clock change but it was bright and sunny, which was nice. and as much as i wanted to just crawl onto the couch and sleep some more, my to do list was already calling my name. we're heading to my parents this afternoon and i promised them bread and cookies. the dishes were threatening to take over the kitchen after yesterday's cook-a-thon. i had some writing to do, some emails to answer. now that i'm mostly caught up all i really want to do is knit a new hat with this gorgeous new yarn i picked up.

have a happy sunday!

and don't forget, the fall sale ends tonight at midnight. selected necklaces, fascinators and more are 30% off. rings are $5 off. enjoy!

writing love on my arm

when i first heard of to write love on her arms, i thought it was an amazing organization and i wished they'd been around in 1991, when my best friend in high school attempted suicide.

people i love have suffered with depression, contemplated suicide, committed suicide. i have watched as people i love struggled with changing doctors, changing medications. i have held the hand of someone i adored when they were hospitalized in a psychiatric ward. i have seen lives and relationships destroyed.

i have struggled with my own mental health, although not to the same degree as other members of my family. i am not alone. i have a good therapist. i have a loving family and the most supportive husband and group of friends you'll ever meet.

that is part of what to write love on her arms is about, reminding people they are not alone. they are "a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery." the part of their vision statement that struck me the most was this: "we live in a difficult world, a broken world. my friend byron is very smart - he says that life is hard for most people most of the time. we believe that everyone can relate to pain, that all of us live with questions, and all of us get stuck in moments. you need to know that you're not alone in the places you feel stuck."

it reminded me of something my grandma used to say - "its hard to be little people." it was one of the sweetest things i remember her saying when i was younger. although as i've grown older i've realized its hard for all people, big and small.

the best thing we can do for those around us, those who know suffer and those we may not know are suffering, is to let them know they aren't alone, that they are loved.

when rachel wrote asking people to participate in TWLOHA day, i knew i was in.

you should be too. write love on your arm. let people know you're there. because none of us are alone.

flashback friday (one day late)

while cleaning my desk this week i found a pile of pictures. i think my grandma must've given them to me.

my mom, dad and me, before they divorced.

my grandpa. such a bad ass.

me. note that i'm squinting at the camera. just like my mom.

a whole lot of nothing

that's what's happening around here. shawn's just gotten out of bed. i haven't moved from the couch all morning. the animals are all sprawled out, snoozing away. good times here at shampton industries.

we'll need to get going soon. we're having some friends and their kids for dinner. shawn's smoking some meat. i'm making pie and ice cream. and although i joke that i can make both in myself, i actually can't.
