mini-break

before kateri arrived this week i'd been working on multiple lengthy to-do lists. things around the house, bill-paying, letter-writing, making things, baking cupcakes... i checked everything off the list so that once she arrived i could just hang out and be with her. i'm so glad i did. i hadn't realized just how much i missed her until she was here.

we did all the things we usually would do in chicago - antique shopping, bad tv, cocktails... and then yesterday we did something we'd never be able to do in chicago.

we drove to hood river for lunch at double mountain brewery and then drove back, stopping at the waterfalls along route 30, including multnomah falls. it was magic, a perfect end to a lovely visit.

mossy pedestal

there is a small stump where a limb was removed from a tree outside our front door. i've been walking past it for the last few months thinking it would be a perfect place to photograph rings. and so yesterday, during the magic hour, i ran outside with a couple of rings to test my theory. i think they look amazing but i'm reluctant. this is a rabbithole i've fallen down before. should i really change all the pictures in my shop? thoughts?

yesterday

it was a spectacularly beautiful day. it was warmer than it had been and so so sunny. it was also been a weird day. i got up to find some of my twitter friends heaping compliments on me, all thanks to emily. so, a really nice way to start the day. then we received some unexpected news (everyone's ok - it was business related. it was a small setback which we are now looking at as a great opportunity.) i had a weird and unpleasant encounter with someone on the internet. i sold some stuff. and the twitter friend love continued throughout.

at some point i dragged a bunch of stuff outside and shot pictures around my yard to see what else i could do. the mossy pedestal had worked out so well. spending a couple of hours in the sunshine, camera in hand, cleared my head completely. by the time i was finished, i had forgotten the unpleasantness, was coming up with some really great ideas for shampton industries for the summer, and was feeling endlessly thankful to emily & company for their kindness.

i really am a lucky, lucky girl.

first farmer's market

shawn & i went to the farmer's market for the first time this year. it was awesome. we sampled a bunch of tasty treats, bought enough veggies for meals for the next few days and rhubarb for pie. for my first pie of the season.

we also ate pie. we stopped at the lauretta jean's booth. we talked a guy, i think his name was noah, about the evils of using shortening in pie crust. yeah, i understand, a buttercrust can't be vegan. i get it. i really do. but to me, pie is all about the crust. a flaky, flavorful crust. and nothing beats butter for a flaky, flavorful crust. lose the butter, lose the soul of the pie. and lauretta jean's crust looked buttery and awesome. we split a meatball & mozzarella hand pie and a mini chocolate pie. both were so good i told shawn that i wanted to go back and totally inappropriately hug noah. shawn, because he's my husband, he loves me and agrees with me wholeheartedly on the issue of pie crust, understood completely.

ready for her close-up

with very little effort on my part, emily agreed to come over and let me put all of these fascinators on her so i could take some pictures for the shop. thankfully it wasn't too dark today, she's a really good sport and my camera almost always takes great pictures because we got more done in two hours than i could've possibly imagined we would! then it took me twice and long to edit the pictures as it did to take them. i got a little wacky in photoshop but i think my fascinators are kind of dreamy, why shouldn't the pictures be?

i think they're the cat's pajamas. pleased as punch i am!
