old and new friends stopped by to say hi. i met a ton of people. we sold some stuff. we made some money. all in all, a pretty great day.

mommie dearest

this is one of my favorite pictures of my mom. she's maybe 16 but somehow i look more like her in this picture than i do in pictures of her when she was 35, my age now.

i talked to her early this morning. she was still in bed, loving her kindle. my dad was going to grill dinner and i'm sure they played a game or two of scrabble. i hope she had a good day and knows how much i love her and miss her.

and happy mother's day to all the other mothers in my life - cheryl, shannon, renee, karen, emily, nancy, jennifer, and many many more.

music mondays

one tiny thing... from Cutesy but not Cutesy on Vimeo.

amanda palmer, damian kulash, ben folds and neil gaiman set out to make 8 songs in 8 hours. the whole process was chronicled on twitter and here. they then invited people to make videos in a week and the oh so talented diane koss did. i love it.

a little ditty about dom & diane

(via)

today is my mom & stepdad's 30th wedding anniversary. THIRTY YEARS. so impressive. really. truly.

30-some odd years ago, she was a single mom, working at the post office. he was a bartender with a crush on the woman who came in with her coworker & his wife every friday night. the rest, including thousands of games of scrabble, is history. may they have MANY MANY more.

i love you guys. happy anniversary!

thing i love tuesday

cosmopolitan hotel, las vegas

hotels. seriously. LOVE. THEM.

i've spent my evening searching for somewhere for us to stay in las vegas this saturday night. i was reading reviews and looking at websites and oh my word, i love hotels.

over the course of our very long relationship and marraige, shawn & i have stayed in a LOT of hotels - good and bad. there was the hotel in venice with blood and bug splatters on the wall where people had killed mosquitos, the basic room in amsterdam with the lumpy bed, the hotel in vegas that smelled terrible, the hotel in a kind of sketchy neighborhood in paris that was under construction and noisy, the hotel room in wisconsin where we slept in a spaceship, the fancy hotel off bourbon street where we saw spike lee in the lobby, the inn in nantucket where i took the best nap of my life and countless roadside motels. and then there was the palace in verona overlooking a cemetery.

due torri hotel, verona

when we were stayed at due torri, it was during the fall, which is apparently a pretty slow time for tourists in verona. i think there was maybe one other guest. but when we checked out there was a sign in the lobby that read "benvenuti jean paul gaultier e amici." that's right. jean paul gaultier and his entourage were about to descend upon the palace. and we had a plane to catch in milan.

oh yeah, i love hotels.

on the road

today we spent the day packing all our stuff for renegade, downloading podcasts, packing the car, tidying the house for the dogsitter, running errands... tomorrow morning we're leaving on our first road trip in a very long time and its huge. 4,476 miles in 3 weeks. we are REALLY excited. i'll be posting here, on twitter & facebook and flickr - if you'd like to see what we're up to.

day 1

yesterday was our longest day of driving. in truth though, it wasn't too bad. good music, nerdist podcasts and pretty things to look at. we saw:

  • hawks. lots of them.
  • groundhogs.
  • a mailbox atop a telephone pole with a ladder up to it.
  • some vultures.
  • a few herds of deer crossing the road.
  • snowy moutains.
  • waterfalls.

i also saw the prettiest magic hour i've ever witnessed. we were near honey lake and EVERYTHING was glowing. unfortunately though, i was driving and there was no good place to pull off the road and take pictures.

actually, taking pictures was a challenge altogether. the mister had the driving frenzy because it was our longest day of driving. he wasn't understand my requests to stop. it was actually kind of funny. i was dying to get out and take pictures in the deschutes national forest. the light was shining through the dense, tall trees and creating these enchanting patches of light on the forest floor. i kept asking shawn to find a place to pull over and he kept passing them by. i couldn't figure it out. and then he finally went to pull over but we had climbed 4000 feet in elevation and i could no longer see those lovely patches of light on the forest floor - because we couldn't see the forest floor, only the tops of trees.

we did stop later in california. mosquitos descended upon me. shawn climbed some rocks. this was our view.

i did take some pictures with my actual camera but i left the cord for it in the car. i was in my pajamas when i realized and well, was just too tired.

our plan had been to drive to lake tahoe or carson city last night but we stopped at in-n-out burger in reno and it felt so good to not be in the car that we just decided to get a room here for the night.

today, 400 miles of driving in the desert and vegas baby, vegas.

for those wondering, monkey's doing great at home. our dog sitter gave her a bath and brushed her and i think she's probably already forgetten about us.
