saturday stats

i have nothing to report. primarily because i cannot find my day book so i haven't been writing everything down. oh, who am i kidding? i've been bad since i got back from new orleans. there was pasta and bread and beer and oh, GOD, don't forget the tator tots. there wasn't nearly enough yoga. there wasn't any bike riding. there weren't any living room dance parties. there was thrifting though. there was some really great mail. there was also some "let's ignore the world and everything i need to do and stay in bed and read." it wasn't a bad week. i just know i can do better. and so i will.

i put a bird on it

emily came over for some photos today. i've made a ton of new fascinators, like the birdie one in the middle, and they all NEEDED a model. emily, she's my favorite model. she's comfortable in front of the camera and totally willing to ham it up a bit for me. basically, we sit around in my studio for a couple of hours laughing and talking while i pin things to her head and snap pictures. i also took some pictures of necklaces since i often get requests to see them on an actual person. so, a few of these things are already in the shop. i'm saving the rest for the launch of the new cookoorikoo.com, which i hope will happen in the next couple of weeks. stay tuned.

behind the scenes

sometimes, behind the scenes, its chaos. a pile of laundry, projects in varying states of completion, coffee cups and kombucha bottles. today though, the house is pretty clean. there's just more sunshine and maybe if you look close, a monkey's tail.

mr. squirrel's big adventure

meet scooter t. squirrel.1 he was a gift from my mom.2  i saw a picture of the cutest taxidermy squirrel holding an acorn and thought, huh, taxidermy squirrel. WANT. so, i went on ebay and while i didn't find one holding an acorn, i did find one riding a vespa. a squirrel riding a vespa! i was in love. in theory. in practice, owning a taxidermied squirrel seemed well, odd and maybe a little gross. so, i sent the link to my mom knowing that she'd find it hilarious and forgot about it. months and months later, on christmas day, my parents showed up at our house with a large box. as soon as i pulled the first bit of paper out of the box i knew what it was.

so, he's lived with us for awhile. in chicago he sat on our window sill - with a few other squirrels.3

i don't know why it never occurred to me to take him out in the world before. seems pretty obvious. except for the part where our old neighborhood was at the crossroads of five gang territories and our street was occasionally used for high speed chases. a photo outing with mr. squirrel in chicago may have been dangerous.

here in portland though, in our nice quiet neighborhood? oh yes, mr. squirrel and i were going to have fun.

but here's the thing - a taxidermied squirrel on a vespa attracts attention. of all sorts. one person stopped to take a picture and she wanted to talk - about mr. squirrel and the chicken on walkabout on our block4 and her errant owners.  half a dozen people stopped to talk to me. two people stopped to ask if he died of natural causes. a couple people just stopped to say how cute he was. a mom and son stopped. mom thought he was awesome. her son said, "that's just not right."

kid, you're not entirely wrong.

1 the t is for theodore.

2 yes, this gift speaks volumes about my relationship with my mother.

3 he was the only taxidermied squirrel. he is not the only taxidermy i own.

4 sadly, there were no photo ops with mr. squirrel and the chicken who had escaped from her yard.

i've apparently decided to make this a monthly thing. so, clockwise from the top left: stamps, note cards, iPhone, a made by hank pouch filled with pencils and pens, a pouch by danny brito with my makeup in it, my wallet, satchel from target, lip balms & lipstick, ponytail holders, keys, nail polish,  discount armageddon by seanan mcguire, peel and stick googly eyes (you know, just in case), TJ's fruit leather, a yellow rose barrette i made, urban legend earrings, a fancy hairclip i've had forever, my stylist's card, a small pouch containing black phoenix alchemy lab imps and a pixelparty princess peach bobbypin.

being a friend

i really can't help but feel amazed by the number of incredible women i've met since i moved to portland. this is not to say chicago doesn't have its fair share.

anyway, this morning i found myself at bettie's surrounded by lovely ladies. some i've been friends with for almost the entirety of our time in portland, some i'd just met. it was such a nice way to spend part of a rainy sunday.

emily, bettie and i were talking. emily said, "wait! you've only been here a year! i feel like i've know you forever." bettie said, " well, shana packs a lot of friendship into a short amount of time."

driving home i was thinking about that and something lucy told me: you need to be a friend first in order to have friends. i'd never given it much thought but i've decided lucy was totally right. i guess i've been living by those words for awhile now without even realizing it. thanks, lucy.
