the right shoes

give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world. - marilyn monroe

for me, these were those shoes. bought on our first trip to italy in 2001, they are the perfect color combination and go with almost anything. when i was still working at the synagogue and had to dress a little conservatively, they were what i wore to feel like myself. they were my flair. they were a part of my armor. they were comfortable and i walked all over europe wearing them. when i had blue hair that was (unintentiionally) the same shade as the soles, strangers would stop me on the street to compliment me on my cool shoes and hair. i was unstoppable in these shoes.

its summer and i'm a creature of habit. converse all stars and my yellow sandals everyday. these have been in my closet, waiting patiently for me to rediscover them. yesterday, i got dressed knowing it was going to be a long day and that i needed cute and comfortable shoes. i pulled these off the shelf and even polished them up a bit. they looked great. i was happy to be reunited with my faithful friends.

then, i was walking and felt what could only be described as a squish. i took another step and felt it again. once i put down what i was carrying i looked down at my feel. the blue soles were pooling around the sides of my feet. the plastic soles had grown brittle and collapsed. completely.

i was stunned. they were really cute shoes. these shoes and i have been through so much together. yes, they are 12 years old. yes, they've walked hundreds of miles. still, they'd been there for me through so much. i couldn't believe they were really dead.

12 years later, i don't need armor quite the way i used to. they served me well.

summer reading

here's an almost complete list of what i've read since memorial day. i know i've forgotten a few.

non-fiction:

genre and genre-ish fiction

fiction:

young adult:

my favorites so far:

  • velveteen vs the junior super patriots by seanan mcguire - does seanan mcguire every stop writing? seriously legit question. she has how many series going at the same time plus new books and kindle content coming out on the regular. i enjoyed everything i've read by her but this one especially. its about superheroes. come on.
  • big questions by anders nilsen - a big beautiful graphic novel i picked up on accident about a community of birds having an existential crisis. i have vastly over-simplified this book. its beautiful.
  • calling dr. laura by nicole s. georges - a graphic novel about a family secret, mothers and daughters, how hard it is to be human sometimes and well, portland.
  • kiss me first by lottie moggach - i can't say i liked this book but it was fascinating to read. dark and twisty and gets into issues of online identity and obsession in a way that made my skin crawl a little.
  • leviathan by scott westerfeld - i don't know what took me so long. so good. so surprised.
  • code name verity by elizabeth wein - also really good. another war story, like leviathan, which is not usually my jam but i really liked this book.
  • let me go by chelsea cain - i love the gretchen lowell/archie sheridan books. they are deeply fucked up thrillers set in portland that are impossible to put down.
  • joyland by stephen king - i haven't loved a stephen king book in a long time and i almost never like his endings. this one though? perfect summer read that didn't make me want to launch it out a window once i was finished.
  • mary and lou and rhoda and ted by jennifer keishin armstrong - this book about the making of the mary tyler moore show is totally my favorite thing i've read all summer. awesome cloris leachman and bettie white stories. plus, lou grant. a little lou grant is never a bad thing. it inspired me to make this:

its like the hamptons...

it all started with this one. its one of the very best moments of the entire first season and it was pretty pivotal (for me.) in that scene, piper lays her cards on the table in an attempt to scare the young woman in a wheelchair "straight." we get a look at how far piper has come since she entered litchfield and she becomes instantly less annoying. plus, her delivery of the line is golden. perfectly timed, like it ain't no thang. it seemed like the obvious choice for my first orange is the new black bird.

bitches gots to learn.

then, this happened. obviously. because suzanne (aka crazyeyes) is my favorite and well, she threw her pie.

i threw my pie for you.

then, i went insane and made a bunch more. its a treasure trove of great lines. i'll rewatch it again soon and will probably make another set.

by all means, attribute my legitimate feelings of sadness to menses.

i don't mess with heroin but i love me some candy.

i'm not crazy. i'm chosen.

there is always hope tomorrow'll be taco night.

i also made a totally NSFW, totally inappropriate one featuring one of mendez's (aka pornstache) best lines, as suggested by a friend of a friend. you can find it here along with the rest of the birds.
