what is going to happen? (jewish holiday edition)

kateri and i talked about god stuff for a bit on our trip to the redwoods. i admitted to really missing the ritual part of synagogue life. finding the right synagogue seems daunting - do i want somewhere totally different than BT or just like it? this has been the hold up for the last four years. oy.

then, i reread are you there god? its me margaret and was honestly overcome with the urge to go to synagogue. what what?

i googled rosh hashanah 2013 and OMG, it's this week. so i emailed the executive director of a reform synagogue here and got the nicest email in return, the kind of email i myself sent regularly. of course i am welcome to attend services!

are you there, god? its me, shana. i guess we're going to hang this week.

unexpected

every synagogue is different, especially when it comes to high holiday services. the prayerbook is dense and the language is beautiful. there are prayers that must be said but the rabbi still has a great deal of flexibility to choose what is read during services. i became very used to BT's way of doing things. toward the beginning of last thursday's service the rabbi read a sentence that i didn't remember and i was pretty sure i was in the right place. "this rosh hashanah, each of us enters this sanctuary with a different need."

the rabbi started his sermon and told everyone he had recently cried while looking at facebook. a colleague had posted a video that made him weep:

he spoke about the video and a little about storycorps and storytelling. he talked about being a people of stories and the importance of both sharing our stories, being open to really hearing other's stories.

when services were over, i didn't stay for the reception. i was feeling all the feels and needed to just process it all.

when i went home and told shawn, he laughed and said, "so he got your number." yeah, i think he did. i think i found a new congregation and rabbi.  i also think i'm really and truly over being pissed off at my old rabbi. huh.

sweet home

we just got home from chicago. we did a lot of running around, trying to see friends and family while eating pizza for as many meals as we could handle. turns out 3 times in a week is more than enough for me. but the end of the week, i was dreaming about green smoothies and juice. i did get to spend an afternoon doing touristy things, solo. hours at the art institute, a fancy cocktail to toast my grandparents on wabash ave., a lovely little walk around the loop.

the main event was donovan and dillon's wedding. i wouldn't have missed it for the world. i thought it was the cherry on top of already perfectly lovely sundae of a week.

i was wrong. getting to spend time with this little man, our nephew, was the cherry on top of our week.

fall tv, i love you so

when we were in chicago, fall tv started to pile up on my tivo. so,  while catching up on shop business and the internets this week, i've also been catching up on tv.

here's a few thoughts:

mom - wow. dark. holy crap that was cringey. and maybe awesome. i'm not sure. but golly i love allison janney and anna faris.

the goldbergs - sort of painful with potential for greatness.

the blacklist - i wasn't going to watch this one. the ads skeeve me out a little. when did james spader morph into someone who bears a strong resemblance to truman capote. i mean, really. he was so handsome in a skeevy, smarmy kind of way but still. anyway, i wasn't going to watch it and then my mom said it was pretty good. it was. AND he doesn't really look like truman capote on the show. phew.

the agents of SHIELD - i started watching and shawn said, "i know i've eventually going to get sucked into this because, you know, joss whedon, but i'm going to try to hold out as long as i can." good luck with that. especially when i'm squeeing loudly every time a new whedonverse person appeared. charles gunn! shepherd book! holy crap, i was a happy girl.

brooklyn nine-nine - i didn't think i was going to like this. and i really, really did. huh.

trophy wife - what up with that horrible name? the show isn't half bad; bradley whitford, woo hoo! it might be great. that name though? ugh.

the crazy ones - i know my policy is to give everything a shot during the fall. i know. and this show stars the star of my favorite childhood show, mork & mindy, and one of my favorite shoes as a grown-up, buffy. you'd think that would work in its favor in my mind. it made me want to watch it less though. but i did and ugh. it gave me feelings. i don't know that i'll be giving it another chance.

i loved: parks & rec. it made me cry. repeatedly. like leslie knope said, "it was like a waking nightmare of happiness."

i'm looking forward to: american horror story: coven and super fun night. also, the neighbors. i've been saving it to watch with kateri tomorrow night. and its on again tonight so there will be TWO episodes. quelle excitement!

i'm annoyed with: bones & grey's anatomy. aren't i always, though?
