softies, plush and the people who make them. i make my wee little birds and i often dream about making snails and narwhals and closet monsters. most of these creatures are big and complicated and would require an engineering degree. so, i gaze lovingly upon the creations of others.
here's a few of my favorites:

crush month - day 18

i wasn't sure what today's crush was going to be. i was having a rough morning and nothing seemed crush worthy. and then i got an email from teena: "anne has me starting to train for roller derby - i definitely need some knee and elbow pads, though.  i am going to kill myself." i just started laughing. and smiling. and couldn't stop for the rest of the day. the idea of teena doing roller derby just delighted me.

maybe its because of the roller derby episode of psych i just watched. or that many of the women who work at my salon are roller derby girls. or that i can't wait to see this:

so, i told shawn about teena's email. he also thinks its awesome. then i told him i'd found today's crush and god love him he said, "why don't you start training for roller derby?" i said maybe, when i have 50% less stuff going on in my life (and maybe 100% less clutziness.)

gertie's blog for better sewing - its my new favorite blog. the clothes are gorgeous. the discussion of vintage sewing and gender politics is fun, smart and never preachy. and this post is echoing in my head each time i cut fabric now - "...But
make sure it's going to fit before going whack-whack into the fabric."

i'd read about uppercase magazine all over the internets. i'd admired the uppercase gallery site forever. i knew that i was going to want to check it out but hadn't been able to find it anywhere yet. while we were in san francisco i stumbled upon a copy in the curiosity shoppe and snapped it up. its charming. its eye candy. and it makes me happy. i've been carrying around ever since and pour over it whenever i get a chance. and i especially loved the article on the curiosity shoppe since that's where i'd found it.

crush month - day 12

alice hoffman.

cheryl has been loaning me books. piles and piles of books. in the pile were two novels by alice hoffman. the story sisters and the third angel. i just started reading the third angel and after about ten pages i was reminded why i love her so much.

i love magical realism. marquez is one of my favorite authors. his short stories leave me gleeful. when i first read smoke and mirrors by neil gaiman, i was struck by the story, "chivalry." it wasn't really sci-fi or fantasy, it was magical realism. the ordinaryness of the extraordinary thing that was happening to the old woman in "chivalry" tickled me. and alice hoffman is really great at magical realism.

practical magic came out when we worked at borders. cheryl & i read
it at the same time. we both have continued to read it almost every
year, in the fall. its almost compulsive. the air begins to chill and i
crawl into bed with practical magic. the story of the owens sisters, their aunts, the curse on their family and the lilacs makes delights me each time i read it.

so, i will read whatever alice hoffman writes. after all, she said, "books may well be the only true magic,"
and that's fine with me.
