back at shampton industries

etsy's been busy for both cookoorikoo and pixelparty. we've had a few good shows. i've been making things with reckless abandon. new things to keep the shops stocked and fresh looking as well as backstock for crafty wonderland. my days start early and end late, sometimes long after even shawn and monkey have gone to bed. i'm tired all the time. i figure i'll catch up on my sleep next week, once crafty wonderland is over.

but i'm also really happy. i'm shocked that i can string a sentence together after writing an entire book during the beginning of the busy holiday season. anyway, i'm pleasantly surprised that, after november's mental exhaustion, i keep waking up with ideas - for things to make and for the book. (although those are just getting written in a notebook for now. editing comes after sleep.)

so, here's a few of the new things i've made this week:

wristwarmers! i've been making these since my first cookoorikoo holiday season. some seasons they sell like crazy, sometimes they don't - there's no predicting. so, i made a small number of pairs this year in some great stripes and extra cozy cashmeres!

i have a few pairs of vintage sweater clips. also, i am always looking at the things i love and wondering if they could be made out of yoyos. so, i've wanted to try and make yoyo sweater clips forever.  i finally got around to it earlier this year and had a friend beta-test them for me. she loved them! yay! made a bunch and they sat int the shop, unloved. boo! but wouldn't you know it? they've started to sell this holiday season! yay again! so, i made a few more pairs. (these are my favorite!)

natalie suggested i make earwarmers toward the end of last winter. i think at the time i didn't want to encourage winter to linger so i put a note on my bulletin board for this year. last saturday was the day. i made over a dozen and ended up keeping one like the one pictured here for myself. they're all made with felted cashmere and are amazingly soft and warm. if you're like me, you won't want to take them off!

there's also a bunch of really fun new stuff in the pixelparty shop. a giant nintendo controller for your wall, some fun new jewelry and something rad for all you happy mac lovers is coming soon.

cookoorikoo is about to hit two big milestones on etsy: 3000 sales and my six year etsyversary. i'm pretty excited about both. my fingers and toes are crossed that i can hit 3000 this year. that would be a nice high note to end the year on. although really, 2012 has been pretty great for me. reaching 3000 would just be bonus points, along with kateri moving to portland in a few weeks.

and if you're in portland this weekend, come say hi!

what's up, cookoorikoo?

i've been making a lot of things lately and all of them are fall colored. i can only assume that the second i have to rake leaves the spell will be broken and i'll go back to the full spectrum but for now i'm enjoying the autumnal hues.

i even had just enough of these fabrics to make two of each of last years best fall sellers: mod fall and changes.

i'm making space in my inventory bins and giving away a few things a day over on my facebook page. i know, i know - facebook is annoying. but if you're already on there, go ahead and like me. you may just get a free necklace or barrette out of the deal!

AND finally, holiday shows. here's my november schedule (for those of you in the pacific northwest):

11/11 - abernathy elementary art & craft fair (pdx)

11/16 +17 - plucky maidens junk fest (pdx)

11/23 + 24 - etsyRain handmade holiday show (seattle)

getting drunk on happy mail

i received the lovliest package in the mail a few days ago. it was from a favorite customer/friend, liz, and it was fabric scraps, all asian or japanese prints - which are some of my favorites for yoyo making purposes. the prints are richly detailed and the color combinations are often unusual but almost always gorgeous. when i was sorting through this pile of fabric later that evening, i felt drunk, overcome with possiblities. i immediately started to dig through my silk bin for matching fabrics. before i knew it i had designed 7 or 8 different necklaces. The one in the picture is my favorite so far but who knows? there's a lot more fabric to go through. thanks again, liz

rusty

so, the holiday season is around the corner. seriously, if i think about it for too long, i start to panic. i make lists of all the things i need to get done to be ready. i obsess over what shows we're applying to and which we're not. i hope that a magic crystal ball will tell me what is going to be this year's best seller. i know i'm not alone. i had multiple conversations, today at our show, with other crafters and artists about the holiday schedule. its on our minds.

BUT we haven't done a show since may. MAY. i think about shows all the time that you'd think i wouldn't forget, you know, what i need to do a show. also, today's show snuck up on me. we both had to scurry about last minute(ish) making signs, pricing items, refilling our craft show apron with change...

we still managed to forget an important part of my display. we forgot a chair. we forgot food. we forgot to brush our teeth*. which could have been worse but since we're still on the cleanse and hadn't had coffee. while no coffee breathe is definitely a plus, let's review: NO COFFEE. i don't know that i've ever done a show without coffee. and to be clear, i never will again.

otherwise, it was a great show. lots of people walked away with great deals on pixelparty and cookoorikoo. plus, its always nice to catch up with the crafty crowd.

i just need to break out the craft show checklist before our next show and keep using it until i'm feeling a little less rusty.

*don't worry. we didn't share our dragon breathe. we ate more than the maximum daily allowance of sugarfree mentos and didn't manage to offend anyone. phew.

longing for crisp cool air

i love hot weather. friends who have spent time in new orleans or austin with me know this about me. when most people are wilting in the heat, i'm well, not. i'm sweaty but comfortable. my skin and hair look great. i almost glow. its a little crazy actually. so, i want you to understand what i mean when i say i love the heat. i really, really do. i love the sun. i even love an occasional sunburn. I KNOW.

i am out of practice. last summer we didn't even install our window air conditioner. it was hot for a few days in august but tolerable. also, we'd been to nevada and texas in may. we knew what hot felt like. sadly, my week in new orleans in february did not provide me with perspective, or any of the other tools needed to cope with a stretch of 90-100 degree days.

unfortunately, when the heat first started, i was also pms-ing. AND we had just begun a three week cleanse. no iced coffee, no sugar, no booze, crazy mood swings and heat. i think shawn wanted to pitch a tent in the yard. all i could do was look at the forecast and weep. i wasn't sure i was going to make it and if i did, was shawn going to as well?

but then we installed the AC. once i'd spent some quality time in the cool bedroom, i readjusted. i woke up early every day to get some work done in the early morning, while the air felt cool. i made a giant bowl of quinoa salad so i wouldn't have to cook for a few days. i just kept checking things off my list. i was not going to let the heat melt away my productivity.

i spent wednesday night sitting on the bed sewing yoyos and before i knew it i had made enough for next week's shop update. i took and edited all the photos. it was ready to go by this afternoon. i'm not going to lie. i am usually editing photos editing photos up until the moment i start listing them online. funny thing, there's a lot of autumnal colors in this update.

oh, the power of air-conditioning and fantastisizing about the fall months ahead.

caaaaaaaaake!

sunday's my birthday. so far, its shaping up to be an easier birthday than 36. i don't know why but that one bugged me. so, 37. whatever. but as is the norm in our house, i'm baking my own birthday cake. shawn has offered repeatedly to try, with the disclaimer that it may or may not be edible. that's nice honey, but no. i'd like to have my cake and eat it too. a few years in a row i made this cake, and then there was last year's rainbow cake (with its mysteriously missing blue layer.) this is this year's cake. baking commences in about 3 hours. wish me luck!

in honor of my 37th birthday, i'm offering a discount in my etsy shop. 37% off with coupon code THIRTYSEVEN. i've been doing these birthday discounts for awhile and they're always fun BUT 37% is a big discount. i debated not doing it but then thought why not! (although i'm pretty sure this will be the last one like it. i'll have to come up with some other new enticement for 38. i'm looking forward to it though.)
