summers are for porch sitting

growing up, i spent a lot of night sitting in our screened in porch with my mom. she worked nights so most nights so most of the year she went to bed before dark. i'm not sure why but all bets were off during the summer. there was a park nearby that had free concerts during the summer and we could hear them from our house. we would sit, usually in our pajamas, reading and listening to the music or the cicadas. i learned two valuable lessons those nights: #1 - just sitting and reading with someone is a totally enjoyable way to spend time with someone; #2 - there is nothing better than a comfortable porch.

last year, we travelled so much during the summer that i didn't give our porch much thought. this spring i decided that i was going to enjoy the crap out of our front porch this summer. that was going to require a bit of work on my part.

mom actually bought us the glider last year when we moved. we painted the porch ceiling sky blue about the same time. i knew someday this porch and i were going to spend some quality time together. we had the little table. i picked up the weird little mushroom at an antique store for $8 recently. i stole the frog from my parents. my mom made the blanket. the namaste y'all pillow came from my very talented friend, kerry. the rug was on clearance at urban outfitters. i love how easily everything came together.

there's still a couple of things i want to make for the porch - a floor pouf to use as an extra seat and a coffee table/stool made from a vintage suitcase. they both seem like a breeze in comparison to the doily screen.

it was a project i've had bouncing around my head for ages. i've been hoarding collecting doilies forever so this seemed like a perfect plan. i measured the space and then started to lay out doilies, pinning and stitching as i went. then, when it felt like it was almost the right size, shawn helped me hang and stretch it. i added a few more doilies to fill in some spots and i need to add a few more but overall, i think it looks great.

we've spent the last few nights hanging out on the porch - sewing, reading, enjoying cocktails and listening to records. shawn launched a website from the porch last night. i'm pretty sure that's where you'll find me tonight. pretty much perfect.

like a hydra

for the first time in ages, i'm not getting ready for a show in the next month. we had three shows over the last month and we probably over-prepared. we have a great deal of pixelparty stock on hand and i was able to restock some of the lovely brick and mortar shops who carry cookoorikoo with my overstock. its a nice position to be in. i've got some wedding orders to work on and have been making things for weekly shop updates but there's no pressure. its nice.

that breathing room has allowed me to take an idea and run with it. i grabbed some handkerchiefs from my not unsubstantial collection and started to play. i am having so much fun making these pieces and i think it shows. people have been responding really well and i've even gotten a few wedding requests! i'm thrilled.

also awesome? i've had time to work on a few personal projects that have been on my list for ages and have added a few new ones to the list. i'm working on the pile of dresses that need to be sewn together, stitching together a pile of vintage crocheted doilies to hang like a screen on my porch, cutting vintage vinyl from my stash for a footstool, sewing a new shade for our front door... the list goes on.

i'd like to think that i could just get it all done this summer but it feels like every time i check an item off the long term list, two other projects pop up. i think i'm ok with that.

yo!

i made yoyos today. just because i hadn't made anything new in awhile. i pulled fabrics and just made some things. not piles and piles of the same necklace for upcoming shows. not multiples of the same barrettes. just a few new things. my to do list was as long as my arm. i didn't really have the time to do it but i had to. i had to make some yoyos. and it was totally fun. its been so busy the last couple of weeks that i think i'd forgotten that. i just really love making yoyos.

shiny and new

i want to shout it from the rooftops! its done! the new www.cookoorikoo.com is DONE! i'm so happy with it that if i could do a cartwheel, i would. actually, i may need to relearn how to do a cartwheel - that's how happy i am.

its got links to all the places cookoorikoo inhabits around the internet, a link to my etsy shop and a link to a brand new shop, cookoorikoo couture.

this shop is going to be for the oddball but beautiful (i think) one of a kind things i make - the things that sometimes sit unnoticed in my etsy shop for months while i renew them again and again, hoping that their person will someday find them and purchase them. even though they don't sell like hotcakes, i don't want to stop making them. they're fun and when they do find their new homes (sometimes with someone on etsy, sometimes with someone at a show) - i'm thrilled to bits.

speaking of being thrilled, have i mentioned i love the new site?

big thanks to shawn, husband and website maker extraordinaire. anyone who has ever launched a website knows its not an easy task and when it came time, he GOT IT DONE - despite preparing for a trip and an already heavy workload and a million other things. he sort of dropped everything and made it happen. you, shampton, are the best. sorry if i was the WORST. CLIENT. EVER.

cartwheels, people. i want to do cartwheels.

behind the scenes

sometimes, behind the scenes, its chaos. a pile of laundry, projects in varying states of completion, coffee cups and kombucha bottles. today though, the house is pretty clean. there's just more sunshine and maybe if you look close, a monkey's tail.

i put a bird on it

emily came over for some photos today. i've made a ton of new fascinators, like the birdie one in the middle, and they all NEEDED a model. emily, she's my favorite model. she's comfortable in front of the camera and totally willing to ham it up a bit for me. basically, we sit around in my studio for a couple of hours laughing and talking while i pin things to her head and snap pictures. i also took some pictures of necklaces since i often get requests to see them on an actual person. so, a few of these things are already in the shop. i'm saving the rest for the launch of the new cookoorikoo.com, which i hope will happen in the next couple of weeks. stay tuned.
