owl mail

i came home after a 13 hour day work to a pile of packages. and as i was opening each of them something occurred to me. it was like a treasury list arriving at my doorstep. or a certain hitchcock movie.

so, we've got a lovely bobby pin and hairclip from muchachak, a felted birds nest bobby pin from mmmfiber, a pendant from arete, some mystery magnets and some fabric from tashabb. it was the perfect thing to come home to. other han my oh so adorable husband - who had left me a piece of cake...

biggest. dork. ever.

i love harry potter. and like everyone else who loves harry potter i've been eagerly anticipating the announcement of when 'harry potter and the deathly hallows' was coming out. but now that there's a date i'm a little sad. a little sad because i know that by july 25 or so i will be done with harry potter. i will know the fate of all these characters that i have come to know and love so much and there won't be another book to look forward to. like i said, biggest dork ever.

one day at a time

anyone who knows me knows  i love clothing. and not just in a protects you against the elements and from embarassing nakedness kind of way. i love clothes. i always have. when i was younger i used to pour over fashion magazines like i was studying for a test. and its only now that i realize how much my love for old movies when i was a kid informed my sense of style now. i love vintage and thrift. i love anthropologie but occasionally i feel that look is too precious. and too expensive. forth and towne is a new found love but again, awfully expensive and a little conservative. i love the librarian look with a bit of a twist.   i love knee length skirts and wear them almost every day.  i love odd color combinations. i love details.

also, i have an odd body. which can complicate matters immensely.

so, i when i learned how to sew a year and a half ago I had every intention of starting to make my own skirts. finding a pattern that worked and going with it.  i purchased a bunch of patterns which i thought could be THE ONE. and then i stumbled onto sew what? skirts. loved it.

and then i discovered the wardrobe refashion blog and was inspired. so inspired i've revamped two old skirts and sewn 4 (FOUR SKIRTS that fit perfectly).  i also resumed knitting a sweater that i'd been neglecting forever.

then there was a post on whipup saying the deadline for new wardrobe refashion pledges was rapidly approaching. why not i thought? when faced with the 2, 4 or 6 month challenge, i took the plunge. SIX MONTHS.

six months with no clothing purchases. this will either be one of the happiest periods of my adult life (save $$$,  no horrible dressing room mirrors, consume less, etc.) or...  well, let's just not go there now...

in the right light

i was driving home today and was listening to an interview with peter o'toole. they were talking about a scene in his new movie where he recites sonnet XVIII (shall I compare thee...) he then began extolling the virtues of the sonnets ande revealed that he knew them all by heart. melissa block asked him to recite one of his choosing. he chose CXXX (my mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun...) and i have to say, i was a little swoony.

resolution #2

wear all my cute clothes. there's a closetful and yet, i wear the same things all the time. no more. cute clothes, 9 days out of ten. no more buying clothes. if i don't like something, i will refashion it until i like it again. if it doesn't fit, i will alter it or have it altered. so, day one of the year of cute clothes...

2006: the year i learned to chill out

this was a wretched year. a terrible year. a horrible year after what i thought was a really bad year. and yet, i figured some very important things out... it wasn't that bad. i have a wonderful life, husband, dog, family. these are the things that matter. being with my grandpa the moment he passed last year, being with my grandma the day we thought she was going to pass this year and being in new orleans, amidst so much destruction and hope - these things put all that other crap in perspective for me. so, no, it wasn't a banner year in the life of shanalee. but there are many more to come.

happy potter, security blanket

i have noticed that whenever i turn on the tv, no matter what time it is, one of the harry potter movies is on. i find this comforting in an inexplicable way.

anticipation

there's a storm fore-casted - 2 to 12 inches of snow. TWO TO TWELVE?! huh? can't they narrow it down a bit more? as much as i'm over winter, i can am excited about the possibility of snow, and more importantly - a snow day. plus, the first snow is always so breathtaking.
